Timber Types
Native Timber
At Old Time Furniture we strive to use native Irish grown
wood in all of our products. We believe that there is no wood more beautiful
or with more character than timber of the highest Irish quality. Where possible
all of the wood used by Old Time Furniture comes from sustainable
forests managed by the state forestry board Coillte.
Foreign Timber
Where a customer desires, we can also source a variety of woods from around
the world to create something really unique. We take care to locate and purchase
only the finest wood with the best grain to go into all of our products.
All of the wood that Old Time Furniture uses comes from sustainable forests.
Hardwood
Hardwood timber is by far the most beautiful wood in a finished product.
The grain, knots and colour are such beautiful elements that most people will
insist on a clear finish be applied to it, to preserve its beauty.
Hardwood as its name suggests is extremely hard wearing and antique furniture hundreds of years old can still be in common use today. Here we have a list of woods that we commonly work with and we can easily source. During our consultation period our designers will show you samples of the hardwoods that we use or if you have something in mind please let us know.
The following is a list of the Irish hardwoods that we commonly use:
- Alder
- Ash
- Beech
- Birch
- Elm

We where possible to use as much native softwood as possible. Irish softwood is characterised by a wide grain and a more than usual “blond” colour which adds to its beauty and makes any room feel brighter.
